I appreciate Chris’s open, blatant honesty.
Chris is one of the best-read people I have ever met. We can go deep into almost any topic, and Chris can cite knowledge he has gained through reading about it. He rattles off authors and book titles with ease, many of which I have never heard of. He was a philosophy major when he left school early, but he still retains a wealth of knowledge about the subject.
Chris is also very good at discerning the message behind the message. We attended the Cambridge Vineyard together, and we often discussed some of the deeper implications of the weekly sermons. He saw things that others missed.
Chris is a good friend. He moved away several years ago to help his wife, Twila, take care of her mother, but he keeps in touch and is always up for a long phone chat to catch up and dig into some heavy topics.
Life has not always been easy for Chris, so it has been great to see how far he has come in putting his life back together. Chris also has a great, booming voice. He can be loud! Several years ago, we were chatting in a local coffee shop, openly discussing our lives, past challenges and addiction. Chris didn’t hold much back, and I think many of the other people heard our conversation. Then this woman walked up to our table, on the verge of tears. She told us that her son struggles with addiction and that hearing Chris’s story was inspiring. She thanked Chris for giving her some hope.
He is not done yet, but his story could be an inspiration to many. Maybe someday he will write a book about his own life.
